Like most solo trippers, I get asked repeatedly why I head into the wilderness alone.  It's a question I've given a tremendous amount of thought to and I've finally concluded that's there's no correct answer.  Every human is unique, therefore the reasons for people soloing are also.  I do know there's no one reason why we solo, but it's the collection of endless responses that make it so unique.  Through all of them though, there is one common theme.  We yearn for something more.  More than what we are currently getting in our "traditional" lifestyle.  It's amazing how in a society where almost anything is attainable instantly, the one thing that isn't is the one we treasure the most.  It takes picking up and heading back to nature for most of us to feel complete.

The majority of us live like robots in "today's" urban jungle for most of the year.  We're programmed into the same routine, constantly repeating the same steps.  In the bush though, nothing is ever the same.  Change is the only constant.  Change in weather, water conditions etc.  Maybe it's that constant change we're really out there for?  Every task is carried out through a different path.  Is this  why we head out, in search of the unknown?   To challenge ourselves both mentally and physically to make sure we get it right and to live through the times we don't!  There's nobody to correct our mistakes or applaud our accomplishments.  Only the trees, the water and the land.  I wouldn't want it any other way.

Why do you solo?  We want to hear from you.  Email us your reasons for heading out alone to whysolo@solotripping.com

"Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountain is going home; that wildness is necessity; that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life".

John Muir

"We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect".

Aldo Leopold

"I have never found a companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers. A man thinking or working is always alone, let him be where he will".

Henry David Thoreau
