One of the greatest
influences on any trip is the weather. This is compounded when
you're alone. Make sure you understand the basic principles of
weather forecasting and
you'll be able to make more informed choices and travel safer.
Clouds: Clouds are an
important indicator of impending weather. By looking at how clouds
are forming, you can make informed decisions for the days travel.
Wind: Wind movements
can also forecast sudden changes in weather patterns. Factors such
as a drastic change in wind direction could mean the onset of a cold
front or impending thunderstorm. Pay attention to these factors
and you'll be able to prepare for them, not getting caught on the water
unprepared.
Thunderstorms: Don't head
out onto the water if you see thunderheads or lightning approaching.
This may sound like common sense, yet every year, deaths occur when
people don't show respect. Thunderstorms can approach quickly.
Don't get caught in open water if you see any activity of thunderstorms
approaching. You may believe it's only a short paddle to shore,
but that can all change when wind and waves kick up as a storm
approaches. Remember, being on the water at this time is the last
place you want to be.

"Thousands
of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are
beginning to find out that going to the mountain is
going home; that wildness is necessity; that
mountain parks and reservations are useful not only
as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as
fountains of life".
John Muir
"We abuse land
because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us.
When we see land as a community to which we belong,
we may begin to use it with love and respect".
Aldo Leopold
"I have never
found a companion that was so companionable as
solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when
we go abroad among men than when we stay in our
chambers. A man thinking or working is always alone,
let him be where he will".
Henry David
Thoreau
