Solo Gear Reviews - Cook Custom Sewing Tundra Tarp - 10 X 10 (By ChiefBob)

I've researched various tarps to replace my aging 10 X 10 nylon tarp which has been a standby on all of my canoe trips. After viewing Cliff Jacobson's video on camping secrets, I was intrigued by his description of a method to secure a center pole to the tarp that wouldn't allow the pole to fall over when a wind gust lifted the tarp. It used a reinforcing patch in the center of the tarp and four loops were secured to the patch. A line could be slipped through the loops and snugged down around the tip of the pole. Ingenious! The Cook Custom Sewing tarp has that feature and more. The perimeter of the tarp has a reinforcing tape sewn to it. I've not seen another tarp with that feature. It has 1" tape loops sewn every 2 feet around the edge and on the center seam. More than enough to allow a variety of set-ups.

Pros:
*1.5 oz sil nylon fabric
*ties every 2'
*center reinforced patch for holding a supporting pole
*comes with 80'of braided cord, seam sealer and stuff sack

Cons:
A bit heavier than I expected, but the 1.1 oz sil nylon fabric was $50 more. Weight shouldn't be an issue for canoeing, but ultralight backpackers might want to consider the 1.1 oz model.

The workmanship seems first rate. While I've not had a chance to use it,yet, I'm certain that it will be a valuable part of my kit.
