One of the most important pieces of safety equipment is often the most overlooked.  Every year many drownings occur, when they could have been easily prevented by wearing a PFD.  Many paddlers feel wearing one constantly is not neccessary (flat water), however, when you're out there solo you should always be wearing your PFD.  In previous years, many chose not to wear one because they restricted movement.  Not so with today's products.  There are several companies that produce PFD's customized specifically for paddling.  These vests are lightweight, feature multiple pockets and D-rings and allow for a full range of motion.  Bottom line:  If you're heading out alone, there's no-one to pull you from the water in case of an accident.  Your vest is your insurance policy; WEAR IT

Companies such as Mustang, Salus and Kokatat manufacture quality paddling vests.

"Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountain is going home; that wildness is necessity; that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life".

John Muir

"We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect".

Aldo Leopold

"I have never found a companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers. A man thinking or working is always alone, let him be where he will".

Henry David Thoreau
